When they first came to Battle Creek in 1980, Joe and Clara Stewart knew that they wanted to do one thing: help children. Joe started out working for the Kellogg Company as the Director of Child Nutrition, which is where he connected with Arlin Ness, then-current President and CEO of Starr Commonwealth and the organization as a whole. “Starr is the kind of place where once you get involved in it, if you believe in the uplifting of people and children, you believe in Starr.”

Our Second Annual Night of Starrs Was a Success!

Last week, Starr Commonwealth continued the tradition of honoring local heroes for children with our Second Annual Night of Starrs. Hazel Maxine Martin-Lias from Albion, Brenda L. Hunt from Battle Creek, and Hans Schuler from Marshall were each presented with the Stand Tall Award and celebrated for their dedication to the basic tenets of Starr’s mission: creating positive environments where children and families can flourish.

Camp Ready Readers to Return This Summer!

Reading KidsLast year, Starr Battle Creek started the Camp Ready Readers program, a community service for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade who are experiencing difficulties in reading and writing. This program, provided for free due to the support of Starr’s donors, was designed to keep children learning throughout the summer with educational and fun literacy lessons and activities. Grant from Battle Creek Family Foundation Boosts Starr

BC office1A $5000 grant from the Santo, Maria, Frank and John Zanetti Foundation will support Starr Commonwealth’s behavioral health program in Battle Creek.

The need for quality behavioral and mental health services for low-income children and families persists in Calhoun County, and Starr has been meeting these important needs for over eight years, in addition to its extensive work in youth development. Continue reading
