On Tuesday, August 20th, Marshall Middle School (MMS) unveiled the Resilient Communities Art Project – a mosaic recently installed in the MMS cafeteria. The theme of the mosaic is “Bravery Dwells in Remarkable Places,” with each student featured in the mosaic sharing what being brave looks like to them. This Resilient Communities Art Project brought together diverse groups of youth to demonstrate a sense of vibrancy occurring throughout the Calhoun County area.
Starr Commonwealth has been awarded a two-year grant totaling $500,000 from the Midland-based Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation to fund the Resilient Schools Project, a collaborative effort that will parallel the Albion-Marshall Resilient Communities Project, which is also being led by Starr Commonwealth. The Resilient Schools Project will initially be piloted in Harrington Elementary in Albion, Michigan, and will then expand to all Marshall Public Schools in the coming months and years to support the entire district.
For the past several years, Starr has been proud to help with the important work of bringing together our local communities of Albion and Marshall. During the closing of Albion schools and the merging of the youth from Albion into the Marshall School District, Starr collaborated with Albion College to host a Youth Symposium to facilitate the kids learning about diversity and building relationships. Recognizing the positive impact of the first symposium, similar programming has been planned and executed since, in order to help students each year get to know one another and learn to work together in the classroom.
We wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who supported our Night of Starrs event last week and helped make it such a success. Continue reading
At Starr Commonwealth, generosity is an important part of what we teach the young people in our care. It is part of the Circle of Courage®, a model of positive youth development that we use to help young people become emotionally healthy. To help students understand how to be generous, we use a variety of service learning projects in our local communities.
