They Call Him “Mr. Wells Fargo”

Stan Allen, a Technical Project Manager in Technology Infrastructure at Wells Fargo, was recently named a 2017 Volunteer Service Award winner.  To the students on our Albion campus, though, he’s known simply as “Mr. Wells Fargo,” as referenced in numerous thank you notes received from staff and students. Stan and his wife, Patricia, have supported our organization for many years, and Stan currently serves as a member of our Board of Trustees and the president of our Alumni Association.

Donor Spotlight: Erick Stewart

Erick Stewart has a long history with Starr Commonwealth. The Stewart family has supported Starr for over 25 years, beginning with his mother, Clara Stewart, serving on our Board of Trustees. “My mother’s enthusiasm and direction was rooted in our family’s deep commitment to youth, education, and vulnerable population support,” says Stewart.  “My parents believe that all children, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status have the right to be loved and supported in life.”

Resilient Schools Project Set to Begin – Creating Spaces for All Children to Flourish

Group of Elementary Pupils In Classroom Answering QuestionStarr Commonwealth has been awarded a two-year grant totaling $500,000 from the Midland-based Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation to fund the Resilient Schools Project, a collaborative effort that will parallel the Albion-Marshall Resilient Communities Project, which is also being led by Starr Commonwealth. The Resilient Schools Project will initially be piloted in Harrington Elementary in Albion, Michigan, and will then expand to all Marshall Public Schools in the coming months and years to support the entire district.

Albion-Marshall Resilient Communities Project

16684181_1228329453880783_1162471551740918012_nFor the past several years, Starr has been proud to help with the important work of bringing together our local communities of Albion and Marshall. During the closing of Albion schools and the merging of the youth from Albion into the Marshall School District, Starr collaborated with Albion College to host a Youth Symposium to facilitate the kids learning about diversity and building relationships. Recognizing the positive impact of the first symposium, similar programming has been planned and executed since, in order to help students each year get to know one another and learn to work together in the classroom.
